The Awful Cover Letter All of Wall Street Is Laughing About

It's that time of year when hopeful undergrads send out their resumes to the investment banks they for some reason want to work for. But one guy's bombastic cover letter has made him the laughing-stock of Wall Street.

A tipster forwarded us this cover letter, from an NYU student named Mark to J.P. Morgan, with the note, "this has been circling around the Street." Marvel at how a single fitness boast transforms what would have been simply a very terrible cover letter to something demanding to be forwarded to everyone on your contacts list.

Dear Sir or Madame:
I am an ambitious undergraduate at NYU triple majoring in Mathematics, Economics, and Computer Science. I am a punctual, personable, and shrewd individual, yet I have a quality which I pride myself on more than any of these.
I am unequivocally the most unflaggingly hard worker I know, and I love self-improvement. I have always felt that my time should be spent wisely, so I continuously challenge myself; I left Villanova because the work was too easy. Once I realized I could achieve a perfect GPA while holding a part-time job at NYU, I decided to redouble my effort by placing out of two classes, taking two honors classes, and holding two part-time jobs. That semester I achieved a 3.93, and in the same time I managed to bench double my bodyweight and do 35 pull-ups.
I say these things only because solid evidence is more convincing than unverifiable statements, and I want to demonstrate that I am a hard worker. J.P. Morgan is a firm with a reputation that precedes itself and employees who represent only the best and rightest in finance. I know that the employees in this firm will push me to excellence, especially within the Investment Banking division. In fact, one of the supporting reasons I chose Investment Banking over any other division was that I know it is difficult. I hope to augment my character by diligently working for the professionals at Morgan Stanley, and I feel I have much to offer in return.
I am proficient in several programming languages, and I can pick up a new one very quickly. For instance, I learned a years worth of Java from NYU in 27 days on my own; this is how I placed out of two including: Money and Banking, Analysis, Game Theory, Probability and Statistics. Even further, I am taking Machine Learning and Probabilistic Graphical Modeling currently, two programming courses offered by Stanford, so that I may truly offer the most if I am accepted. I am proficient with Bloomberg terminals, excellent with excel, and can perform basic office functions with terrifying efficiency. I have plenty of experience in the professional world through my internship at Merrill Lynch, and my research assistant position at NYU. In fact, my most recent employer has found me so useful that he promoted me to a Research Assistant and an official CTED intern. This role is usually reserved for Masters students, but my employer gave the title to me so that he could give me more work.
Please realize that I am not a braggart or conceited, I just want to outline my usefulness. Egos can be a huge liability, and I try not to have one.

Major Conversations: how to tell your parents you are changing your major | USA TODAY College

Many college students change their major, and some dread telling their family about it. If you fall into this camp, don’t worry. If presented properly, you can solicit their support. Here are some techniques to help you break the ice and prepare for the conversation.

1. Start the conversation early.

The longer you wait, the more shocked your parent(s) will be. They might also be hurt that you did not seek their input. If you think you can wait because you view them as aloof and disinterested, be careful. They could just be acting this way because they do not want to directly influence your decision. Make no assumptions, and take the initiative to begin the discussion.

2. Focus on your common ground and understand that they have good intentions.

Both you and your family want you to be successful and happy. If they ask tough questions, it is only because they want to confirm that you are making an informed decision. Reframe this as a valuable resource rather than lecturing.

3. Lead with the facts instead of emotional appeals.

Identify the reasons you disliked your initial major. Then share the research you have collected about yourself and your options. If you met with or shadowed a professional in the field, share the information you acquired. This dispels the misconception that you made the decision impulsively, while also helping them learn more about your new program of study.

4. Celebrate the experience.

Mention that nearly half of all college students change their major before they graduate. This will help them understand that this exploration is not only common, but it is also beneficial. Tragically some college students ignore their dissatisfaction, only to have it surface later when it is too late. You, however, have had the courage to proactively look for alternatives, which will improve your motivation, concentration and chances of securing satisfactory employment after graduation.

5. Be realistic.

No career or academic program is perfect. Identify any disadvantages that surfaced in your research to demonstrate that you have examined it from every angle.

6. If some concerns still remain, identify the course of action you will take to address them.

For example, if you learned that the job outlook is only growing at an average rate in your new occupation, outline the internships, employment or co-curricular activities that you will pursue to gain a competitive edge.

7. Provide some peace of mind.

For instance, share that you will be meeting with an advisor to develop a plan of study to ensure that you do not need to extend your graduation date. This again conveys your careful analysis of the decision and reassures your family members that you will not incur additional tuition expenses as the result of the change. Also emphasize the activities you will pursue to verify your decision, such as finding a part-time job related to your new major or enrolling in an introductory class. Continue to share your confirmation over time in case they fear that you will be dissatisfied or change your mind again.

8. Provide specific examples of how they can learn about your new major or career.

Share with your parent(s) the websites that you have visited, such as your university’s catalog, O*Netor the Occupational Outlook Handbook.

9. Ask for their support.

Emphasize that you value your family’s input and hope that they can come to share your enthusiasm about the new career you have chosen.

10. Assess the importance of your own voice and the voice of others.

More than likely, your culture and background will influence your perceptions. Some Americans value independence, while others value communal decision making. Only you can determine the role and importance others will play in the process.

· Follow up on your networking contacts. Use SpringBreak to develop a list of organizations to submit an application/resume.

· Don’t narrow your range to just a few employers.

· Be an entrepreneur and consider creating yourown summer job, such as house sitter, animal sitter, dog walker, lawncare/gardener, personal assistant, house painting, home repair person, etc.

Formula for Success

1. Set your priorities. Determine what you lookingfor in a summer job.

2. While on the job, be eager to take theinitiative and be the person who is willing to go the “extra mile.”

3. Take a seemingly ordinary job and make adifference; find a way to hone your professional skills.

4. A summer job is your opportunity to test yourskills and perhaps work toward meeting your career goal.

5. Make the most out of your summer job bydeveloping skills and gaining experience that will be valuable to you in thefuture.

6. Evaluate your needs. The type of job availableto you depends to some extent upon your qualifications, access totransportation, ability to relocate and financial needs.

7. Think about the skills that you have to offer toan employer. Do you learn quickly? Are you a good communicator and get alongwell with others? Can you speak a second language? Do you have any transferableskills to offer from previous jobs? Are you dependable and responsible?

8. Consider personal traits that you possess:Analytical, organized, detail-oriented, good with numbers.

9. Be confident and show an interest in theposition.

10. Remember, it’s never too early to think aboutsummer employment. Keep in mind you may need to apply six months in advance,i.e. National Parks.

Develop a resource list of prospective employers

Ø Reviewpositions in the classified section of The University Star and yourlocal or hometown newspapers.

Ø Browseorganization websites and use the search engines listed on the Career Serviceswebsite under “RecommendedInternet Resources,” such as Petersons.com, summerjobs.com, coolworks.comand many more.

Ø Checkwith local, city, county and state government agencies websites.

Ø Examinesummer job books in the Career Services Resource Library.

Ø Payattention to flyers/posters on bulletin boards.

Develop a great resume with assistance from CareerServices. If you already have a resume, update it with any new information tomake sure it is concise. Resume tips:

1. Keep it simple. Make it only one page!

2. Include campus and permanent addresses,telephone numbers (cell, home, work), and e-mail address.

3. List your education, honors, activities, specialskills, talents and experience.

4. Don’t forget to include anything that sets youapart from the competition.

5. Create a list of references of people who knowyou and your capabilities and ask for permission to use their name. (Include:name, title, address, telephone number and e-mail address).

6. The list should consist of a minimum of threereferences and be separate from the resume. Professors, supervisors andco-workers make good references.

A. Completing Applications

1. Be prepared to complete an application form.

2. Read the instructions carefully.

3. If some questions do not relate to yourbackground, write NA (not applicable) in the space.

4. List job experience from most recent job tooldest along with a brief job description of work performed. Include name ofyour supervisor/title, organization name, address and phone number.

5. If you are faxing or e-mailing an applicationform to an employer, always send it with a cover letter along with a copy ofyour resume.

6. The cover letter should be professionallywritten. Make it brief, concise and positive to convey that you are a good fitfor the position. You can find more information on writing a coverletter or resumeon the Career Services website.

How to be a Sloppy and Desperate Job Seeker

Like a typical career services employee, I was checking my email when the title of one of them caught my eye. It was from an employer seeking temporary help, and the title of this one just seemed clever without sounding cliche. It was one of the few advertising emails that I actually read, that I was really happy that I opened it. It it is the inspiration for this blog post because this particular employer was trying to candidly help any one thinking about applying to the jobs. You can expect a few more blogs from me next week on the part-time job search, but let us discover how to be a sloppy and desperate job seeker.

1. Do not follow directions.
If you want to absolutely be overlooked in any job search, just do not do what the employer asked you to do when you apply for the job. This way, you can tell people that you applied for jobs, but you are guaranteed not to get a response.

2. Send a generic response.
Even though we are living in the 21st century, just don't bother to use any of the technology to update your resume or customize a letter. In this way, all of the employers can feel equally privileged to read your qualifications because they would just be lucky to even interview you. Better yet, make horrible spelling and grammar mistakes in your writing. Use acronyms and don't spell anything out. The employer should be smart enough to know what you meant to write.

3. Ask the employer to tell you about all of the job openings.
If you open your search this way, you can further emphasize that the employer is just lucky you even contacted the organization. I mean, people like YOU don't just ask for jobs every day, so why wouldn't an employer want to tell you all about the job openings. Really, what else is that person doing besides working?

4. Complain about your job search.
Truly sloppy and desperate job seekers will just tell the employer that a job is needed to pay the bills instead of telling the employer what you bring to the table. For extra measure, say how long you have been looking, and how tired you are of looking for a job. By being this honest, the employer will know that you will complain about things at work instead of offering solutions if you hired. You're just keepin' it real.

5. Wear inappropriate attire.
When asking about jobs in person or completing applications at the work site, do not wear something that is appropriate for that workplace. If it is a conservative employer, be sure to wear tight fitting, baggy, ripped or clothes with inappropriate remarks printed on them. You will make a lasting first impression, and there is no way you will improve your chances of being called for an interview.

There you have it. Five of the best ways to be a sloppy and desperate job seeker to improve your chances of NOT being interviewed for jobs. Next time, I'll write about the positive side of part-time employment, and some good ways to conduct your search. I can't promise you that I won't write about common mistakes again. I am just writing what I know, and about my own experiences.

How to get THE job in 5 months

While school is getting into full swing, so is job hunting. Whether it is aninternship or a full-time job, there are tips to get ahead of the curve and getthat dream job by May.

1. Talk to Career Services. Their main goal is to help students in every aspectof the career hunt. Counselors will be with you every step of the way.Jobs4Cats is a great way to begin your search. You can upload your resume,search for jobs and internships and get tips from the pros at Career Services.

2.Ponder. Think about the field where you want to be involved. Do you have aspecific path in mind, or are you looking to see what is out there? Explore andinvestigate.

3. Start networking. It is never too early to meet and talk to otherpeople. Professors are a great tool to use if you are having a littletrouble getting started. They know who you need to talk to and how to meet them.You might also talk to neighbors, family, friends and prior supervisors. Jobfairs are also a great source to meet employers.

4. Play CSI. After you choose your field, investigate into the companiesin the area you are interested in living. Know what it is the company does andhow you will be an asset.

5. One word: Resumes. Sure, that cursive font may look nice, but it makes yourresume hard to read. If it is your first time applying for a job, you want yourresume to highlight your achievements in a concise manner. Career Servicesoffers a 48-hours resume critique online and “Rock Yo Resume” on March 26 &27 from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. in the quad where counselors will be available tocritique resumes in between classes.

I remember the last semester of my senior year—one monthbefore graduation to be exact—sitting in my apartment, dazed and confused aboutthe job search process. Thinking: Wheredo I even begin?

Let me clarify a few things from the previousstatement. First, by dazed and confused,I mean desperate and crying. Also, Iwasn’t alone in this endeavor/cry-fest, I was accompanied by my roommate andfellow Psych major. Certainly, my fellowsobber did make me feel a bit better at first. However, I soon realized we might not be much help to one another in thejob hunt. All this one month beforegraduation. I mention the timeframeagain because, at the time, I thought it was sufficient time to find my dreamjob, with dream pay, at a dream location (more on how these goals take time,later).

See anyresemblance as you start your job search? I hope that’s not the case. But Ioffer up this story because, though I am now a Career Counselor with TexasState, I’m not even going to pretend like I had it all figured out when Igraduated. What I can do is offer somesuggestions during this time in your life, and steer you to the free—yes, free—careercounseling and job search resources we have here at Career Services. You may think you are the only one who doesnot have it figured out. But I canassure you many people are in your shoes: Nervous, scared, confused, or just feeling “behind.” There is hope. The job search process is just that—a process. It that takes time, energy, and will power,but can be very rewarding.

Tip#1 - Know Yourself - What are your strengths, the values you wantin your life, personality characteristics, interests, weaknesses, and, most ofall, your goals for the future? If youdon’t know yourself, how can the company with whom you’re interviewing evenbegin to know you?

Tip# 2- Practice a Targeted Job Search -Many people are open to “whatever” job title or company comes their way, in“whatever” city or state that happens to be. Taking a “whatever” attitude yields endlesspossibilities, and actually spreads the job-seeker’s time and effortsthin. One result are very generic job searchmaterials (resume, cover letter, and application). However, companies do not want generalized applications. They want resumes that are relevant andtailored to the position they are seeking to fill. Applying for a job, unlike what many peoplethink, is not a numbers game, that the more jobs you apply for, the better. It is more about quality applications for jobs that actually interest you. Therefore, focus your efforts toward a few carefully selected job titlesor companies and then invest the time to tailor your application materials (forexample, making your resume fit the job posting).

Tip#3- Commit - Be willing to make a commitment to the job search. Finding a job is now your new full- or part-timejob. This means dedicating a set amount of hours each week to researchjobs and companies, compile applications, and send out tailored resumes and coverletters. Make that corner of youroffice/room/library into your new Job Search Central. Set hours for yourself, as well as manageablegoals (for example: I plan on applying to 3 positions this week). Dedicate and focus your energy, but also timeand space for mental breaks, for rejuvenation and relaxation.

Tip #4- Network and Connect – The word “Networking” sometimes evokes abad connotation, so let’s think of it more as “connecting with the people youknow.” Or those people you want toknow. You can connect with everyone: Professors, friends, family, family friends,your friend’s family, professional organizations, church, sports clubs… thelist goes on and on. The truth is thatit is a small world after all. And youneed everyone in your world to know two things:

#1 You are looking for a job,preferably in (your chosen) field, and,

#2 Youare hoping to meet anyone they know who might be helpful.

Connecting with others can happen face-to-face or online orin many ways. In particular, you shouldjoin LinkedIn, a professional networking site utilized by many recruiters andpossibly your own potential employer!

BETHLEHEM, PA—What do employers look for in a resume? Beyond the candidate’s ability to meet standard criteria—the “right” major or work experience—employers are most likely to look for evidence that the candidate is able to work in a team, according to a new survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). Nearly 80 percent of employers taking part in NACE’s Job Outlook 2012 survey said they search for evidence that the potential employee can work in a team, and more than three-quarters indicated they want the resume to show the candidate has leadership abilities and written communication skills. Evidence of problem-solving skills and a strong work ethic round out the top five “soft skills” employers seek on resumes. In fact, says Edwin Koc, NACE director of research, “Overall, results show that the ability to work in a team is the number one soft skill employers seek in their new hires.”Consequently, job candidates need to showcase that ability in their interactions with employers, not just on the resume, but in the interview as well. Fall into the Job Search

I know it's been a while since I was an undergraduate, but every time I walk around on campus this time of the year I am reminded of how I felt as a student. Right after fall midterms, I was in this weird mix of emotion. I was elated at the progress of some classes, and just down right disgusted at others. That's right. I wrote down right!

Now that I am a professional, the approaching holidays bring other memories to mind - the job search. You may internally think that you should just focus on your studies so that you can make the grades that you need to make. You may feel too tired to launch a search right now. I encourage you not to put this off. If you have no idea where to start, there is one thing that I want you to do. Make an appointment with a career counselor. Just dial 512-245-2645 and say "I want to make an appointment to see a career counselor about my job search". Easy. Have some one hour times in mind, and you can just tell the counselor everything that concerns you regarding finding a job. It really doesn't matter what kind of job you are seeking. Talk to the counselor about full-time jobs, seasonal jobs, internships, part-time jobs and summer jobs. Just start the ball rolling. You will feel a lot better when you can say to any of your loved ones "I am meeting with a career counselor to help me with my search".

So, what if you have done that first step, and you are just not getting any responses in your job search? You could still meet with a counselor to discuss strategies. Amazingly, there are a number of behaviors that many do not contemplate in the search. For example, have you ever listened to yourself speak? No, really. We have all had the professors that we didn't like in class, just because it was hard to listen to that person lecture. Well, what do you sound like? No one wants to hire someone that sounds as flat as a dish towel (unless that is a job requirement). Does your tone sound desperate? You know how those people sound, too. They are the ones that you won't call back or the ones you won't give your phone number. It's hard to warm up to that person, right? If you visit a potential employer in person, what are you wearing?

Just asking for an application or inquiring about a job in person is part of the interview. I remember meeting a young man (with his mom) and helping him with his part-time job search a few years ago. He had visible piercings and tatoos. I explained how to use our database and he focused on one job that he really wanted. I gave him some tips and he and mom went on their way. A couple of weeks later, his mother called me because she noticed that there was an opening in our office. I explained that we have a dress code for our employees, and her son's look simply would not work in our office. A few days later, I did meet the young man again. His mom sent him to the office anyway. This time, there were no piercings, and he wore khaki pants! Imagine what I might have thought when I met him the first time if he had been dressed that way. Do not understimate the power of a good first impression.

To conclude, we know it can be challenging to find work, but our staff wants to help. Why not draft us to your team this fall? Don't put it off.

10 Worst Mistakes of First Time Job Hunters

If you're in your final year of college, be warned: the rumors about landing a job in this economy are true. You should be taking steps today, not next semester, to prepare yourself.
An April 2011 survey conducted by Braun Research on behalf of Adecco Staffing U.S. found that 71% of 500 recent four-year college graduates would have done something differently to prepare for the job market. While companies will hire 9.5% more graduates from the class of 2012 than they did from the 2011 graduating class, according to another poll, employers are still looking for the pick of the litter.
"When you're not familiar with the job market or job seeking, you really don't know how much effort it will take," said Kathy Kane, senior vice president of talent management for Adecco NA,
To find out what students can do to better prepare for the current job market, we spoke with career coaches, recruiters and recent graduates.
"I would have started looking for jobs earlier."
Putting off your job hunt isn't a wise move. Among the Adecco survey's respondents, 26% said they would have started looking for potential positions earlier.
"It's easy to fall into 'my weekend starts on Thursday' mode, rather than 'I've got to put my job search into full gear today' mode," said Kane, "but procrastinators will have fewer choices."
Most students don't start thinking about their careers until they have to, said Lindsey Pollak, a career expert who focuses on Generation Y in the workplace. "There's so much you can do that's not a lot of work and not overly time consuming."
"I would have actually networked."
For students and older professionals alike, networking can feel like the most dreaded part of a job hunt. Twenty-nine percent of respondents to the Adecco survey said they would have spent more time building a solid professional network.
"Networking can be scary," said Pollak, "but about 70% of jobs are found through networking." Students who spend their time trolling job boards should instead spend that time making solid connections with people who are respected and involved in the workforce, industry experts and alumni, and spend only 30% of their time looking at job listings.
For the most part, Pollak said, people love to help students. As long as you are gracious and thankful and not trying to hard-sell yourself right off the bat, potential connections are likely to be receptive.
"I would have taken on a job or an internship in addition to my courseload."
Bottom line: There's no substitute for experience.
Having some professional experience under your belt before entering the workforce has become a necessity for many employers.
"I don't know a company that doesn't want people with internship experience," said Pollak. "My advice is to get yourself through the recession any way you can, and come out with whatever experience you can."
Look for internships that provide college credit or are paid. Otherwise, gain work experience in a setting such as waiting tables -- and talk with people at each and every table. "There are CEOs who started networking while they were waiting tables," Pollak said.
If you can't find a full- or part-time position on- or off-campus, try going to the Internet for virtual work. "There are jobs you can get without even leaving your dorm room," Pollak said, including maintaining someone's social media outlets, working as a copyeditor or building a website for a small business. Many of these types of jobs have flexible hours, an added benefit for busy students.
"I would have gotten more involved in career-relevant extracurricular activities."
On-campus groups, clubs, events and activities are a great place to get experience that translates to the working world. Skills are skills. You can show you have gained relevant experience by planning concerts on campus or working as a freshman orientation assistant, for example.
"Everybody wants to hire people who understand how to manage projects, work alongside difficult people, and have built their communication skills," said Kane. If you were on the dance team, and choreographed a group performance, for example, you've developed creative, leadership and training abilities, all of which translate to the workplace.
Experts say it's a matter of framing the extracurricular experience you've had in a professional way. Try thinking of your biggest accomplishments as a member or leader of an extracurricular group, and using them to brainstorm resume bullet points.
"I would have applied to more jobs."
Many recent graduates regret not putting out more feelers. According to the Adecco survey, 26% of recent graduates would have applied to more jobs prior to finishing school.
Putting your hat in the ring is the only way to be considered for most opportunities. The trick is to keep track of the applications you send out. "Sending in your application for hundreds of jobs on Monster.com will work against you," said Dan Schawbel, a personal branding expert and author of Me 2.0. Not only is it difficult to remember what you applied for and when, but you're also likely to send out generic resumes.
Write your resume so it highlights your experience with each position's requirements. Not sure what your relatable skill-set is? Try creating a Venn diagram that illustrates all of the skills and experience you've developed. The overlap can indicate your primary strengths, and the remainder can help you see where you have specific skills related to your prospective industry.
"I would have focused more on becoming 'professional.'"
Save the sweatpants and fratty T-shirts for the weekend. Replace them with clothes that are fitted, pressed and at the very least casual-Friday appropriate even when you're going to class. You may think dressing well every day doesn't matter, but the professors you ask for recommendations will remember your style.
Another way to show your professionalism is to pick up the tab for networking coffees, and send thank-you notes for even a little bit of help. "If someone gives you advice, all you have to do is say thank you after the fact," Pollak said.
And, of course, monitor your online appearance. Clean up and privacy-protect your Facebook accounts, start Tweeting interesting news (instead of which class you're skipping), be careful where you "check-in" on your smartphone, and set up a solid LinkedIn profile, Pollak said. Add a signature line to your e-mail account and set up a professional voicemail message.
"I would have done more to figure out what my career goals were."
Your first job out of college is unlikely to be your dream position, if you even know what that is. Indecision can hold you back, so set up some informational interviews to try to narrow your focus.
"It's a rare gift at any age to know what your passion is," said Bruce Tulgan, CEO of Rainmaker Thinking, a New Haven, Conn.-based management consultancy that focuses on integrating generations in the workplace. "In 99 out of 100 cases, people start to learn about a career path, gain experience in something, and over time they become passionate about it."
Don't be afraid to try something that you're initially lukewarm about, said Pollak. "I don't believe in dead-end jobs when you're early in your career," she said, "because everything is experience."
"I would have gone to the career center."
This is what they call a "no-brainer." You might not think you need your university's services, but there's no reason to find out the hard way you did something wrong that could have been avoided.
"College students have an advantage other job seekers don't -- an on-campus career center staffed with people who have one purpose: to help students find jobs," said Kane of Adecco. "Most career centers aren't taken advantage of to their full extent."
Once you get to know the counselors and they know what you're looking for, they can tell you about new opportunities, Kane said. It's also a good place to practice your elevator pitch, draft introductory e-mails or cover letters, perfect your resume, or any other measures you don't want to run by friends or family members.
"I would have kept better track of my achievements."
Experts say that even on-campus accolades belong on your resume.
"Start creating tangible results with your name on them so you have evidence of your ability to add value," said Tulgan. "Save the tangible results, date them, and be prepared to present them."
Tracking how many donations you collected from calling alumni or that you created a new filing system for the admissions office are achievements that translate to everyday work activities. Don't forget to highlight your academic awards, such as making the dean's list or honor society.
"Any accomplishment matters," said Schawbel. " Track them in a public setting, like your LinkedIn profile." If it's not out there for people to find, those achievements won't be doing anything to help you, he said.
"I would have focused more on developing relevant skills."
Having an awareness of industry-specific skills as well as broad, transferable ones is a way to really stand out.
"Companies aren't investing as much in training, so companies are more likely to look for someone who can hit the ground running," said Kane. That isn't just familiarity with industry terminology, it's also having professional "street smarts."
"Show your understanding of chain-of-command issues, working with older, more experienced colleagues and working with people in parallel roles in other departments, or with vendors and customers," said Tulgan.
You should also have excellent customer service knowledge – not only to use as a professional, but also to use as a job seeker. That includes making yourself available, being fully prepared for interviews,and knowing how to problem-solve, Tulgan said. "Above all, develop self-management skills and the ability to work effectively with a manager," he said.

FedEx Corp. will hire 20,000 seasonal employees to help the company handle its busiest holiday season yet.

The Memphis-based transportation company expects to move more than 17 million shipments, almost double its daily average volume on Dec. 12, the projected busiest day in company history. In 2010, the company’s busiest day was Dec. 13, with 15.6 million shipments.

FedEx (NYSE: FDX) says the 10 percent year-over-year increase will be driven by FedEx SmartPost, a residential shipping service designed for online and catalog retailers, as well as expected increased volume at FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery.

Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, FedEx forecasts more than 260 million shipments to move through its worldwide shipping networks. This would be a 12 percent increase for the holiday season over last year when 232 million shipments were processed.

“As e-commerce continues to grow and demand increases with more customers shopping and conducting their business online, FedEx SmartPost is poised to handle the increase in shipments,” Fred Smith, chairman, president and CEO of FedEx said in a statement. “More than 290,000 FedEx team members also stand ready to deliver the holidays and enable commerce around the globe.”

Holiday sales are expected to grow 2.8 percent during November and December to $465.6 billion, according to theNational Retail Federation. This is higher than the average increase of 2.6 percent over the last 10 years.

The NRF also predicts that 46.7 percent of shoppers will buy online as compared to 43.9 percent in 2010. Holiday online shopping is expected to increase by 12 percent during the 2011 season, according to eMarketer.

When it comes to the importance of candidate skills/qualities, employers are looking for team players and candidates who have strong verbal communication skills, according to respondents to NACE’s Job Outlook2012 survey.

Survey participants rated “ability to work in a team structure” and “ability to verbally communicate with persons inside and outside the organization” as the two most important candidate skills/qualities. These are followed by candidates’ “ability to make decisions and solve problems,” “ability to obtain and process information,” and “ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work.”

The least important candidate skills/qualities on the list are the “ability to create and/or edit written reports” and the “ability to sell or influence others.”

School of Journalism & Mass Communication

Our Past

Journalism first appeared at Texas State with the publication of The College Star in 1911. The first journalism course offerings began in 1930 and were offered by the English Department. That led to the creation of a Department of Journalism in 1946. Our educational mission expanded in 1966 and we were renamed the Department of Mass Communication. In 2003 we joined the ranks of programs with national professional accreditation and, in 2006, became the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Our Present

University Star Award Recipients

In the past year, The University Star, KTSW-FM, and Bobcat Update (TV) won more than 45 student journalism awards at the state, regional and national levels. Students also participated in the PR Bateman Competition and the AAF National Student Advertising Competition. And new student groups were formed around interests in social media, events planning and photo journalism. There are now a dozen student media organizations.

Career Fairs are job seeker’s opportunityto make contact with many great employers! It's important to be prepared andready to make a great first impression. Let me tell you how!

Job Fair Success Strategies
To be successful at a job fair requiresplanning and strategizing so that you make the best use of your time. Also,your approachto a job fair can greatly affect the outcome.

Be sure to maintain a positive attitude and create aprofessional image. Feeling good and looking sharp will boost your aura ofconfidence which is often not possessed by the majority of the competition.Although attending job fairs is only a very small part of any job searchstrategy, there are few opportunities available where get to meet individualemployers prior to obtaining an actual job interview. It is therefore essentialthat you thoroughly prepare yourself prior to attending a job fair.

Listed below are 8 job fair strategies that will not onlyincrease your likelihood of success, but will also make you much morecomfortable with the whole job fair process.

1.Do your research.
Take time to research participating companies prior to the job fair. Afterdeciding which companies you most want to meet with, take some time to checkout each of their websites to learn more about the company and the jobs theyhave available.

2. Dress professionally andcreate a favorable first impression.
Since first impressions are critical when searching for a job, dressingprofessionally for a job fair makes perfect sense. Conservative business attireis often preferred for both men and women but business casual may beappropriate for certain jobs or professions. Also, attention to detail isimportant so be sure to wear comfortable, neat, well-polished shoes; carry aprofessional briefcase or portfolio; ensure your hair is clean and wellgroomed: your nails are neatly manicured, and go light on make-up and perfume.It is best to downplay tattoos and additional body piercings whenever possible.Dressing professionally relays the message to employers that you are a seriouscandidate in the job search process.

3. Be prepared and develop aplan.
When arriving at a job fair it’s wise to first study the layout of the fair andcheck to see if any additional employers have been added to the list. Inaddition to your resume, be sure to bring several pens, a notepad, and businesscards to hand out if you have them. You may also carry a reference sheet thatreminds you of important information on the companies you want to meet. One jobfair strategy you might want to employ is to plan on meeting with your firsttier employers first and then move on to your second and third tiers.

4. Bring along lots of resumes.
Be sure to bring extra resumes to the fair. You may end up handing out morethan one resume to participating employers, so it’s best to maximize yourefforts by bringing an ample supply of resumes to avoid running out. Make sureyour resume is well prepared and critiqued by at least one other person. Youmay decide to bring along different versions of your resume. Targeting yourresume to specific jobs and/or employers offers an opportunity to focus onspecific skills and accomplishments that’s required for certain jobs orprofessions. Resumes should always be printed on professional white, gray, orbeige resume paper and free of photos, fancy or colored fonts.

5. Meet and greet employers.
Since first impressions are critical in the interviewing process, be preparedto assertively introduce yourself with confidence and enthusiasm. Maintaindirect eye contact, offer a firm handshake, sport a genuine smile, and showenthusiasm - since these are all attributes employers look for in potential newhires. Be prepared to give each employer you meet a 30 – 60 second elevatorspeech that highlights your career objectives, strengths, interests, relevantskills and the type of job you are seeking. Be prepared to answer questionssuch as why you want to work for this particular company or why you believethat you would be an asset to the organization.

6. Practice and preparequestions for the interviewer.
The best way to prepare for an interview is to practice, practice, practice. Besure to write down any vital information on the back of the employer’s businesscard to make it easy to follow up. Be prepared to ask each employer questionsincluding how to arrange for a second interview.

7. Be prepared to network.
Career Fairs are all about networking. It has been estimated that between 75%of all jobs are found through networking. By networking with recruiters, andother job fair participants you can increase your personal connections andimprove your chances of getting called back for a second interview.

8.Don’t forget to follow up.
Follow up with the recruiters you met at the job fair immediately after theevent. Send a personalized thank you e-mail which identifies you as athoughtful and serious job candidate that they will want to get to know better.By restating your interests in the company and your qualifications, you willput yourself on their radar screen when they are in the process of seekingcandidates to interview for future positions that open up. You may want toattach another copy of your resume with your e-mail to ensure that the employerhas your information available
