Scholarship Posting

Thomas M. Keel Scholarship Fund

The Thomas M. Keel Scholarship Fund was established in 2004 in honor of decades of dedicated service to the State of Texas in the public finance arena. A former Director of the Legislative Budget Board (1967-1982), Vice Chancellor for UT System (1983-1990), and former faculty member of the LBJ School of Public Affairs (1990-2004), Tom Keel for more than 50 years demonstrated an exceptional commitment to mentoring public servants in non-partisan public policy tradition.

Applications are now being accepted for the Thomas M. Keel Scholarship in Public Policy and Finance. One or more scholarships of between $1,500 and $3,850 shall be awarded for the spring of 2011 to undergraduate and/or graduate student(s) from a Central Texas college or university.

Likely awardee(s) will be students with an interest in state government, public policy, and public finance issues. There are no declared major or minor disciplinary requirements for application. All scholarships are merit-based scholarships.


Criteria:
•Scholarship recipient will serve as a policy intern in the spring of 2011 with the Legislative Budget Board, the Office of the Lieutenant Governor, the Texas State Comptroller, or a similar fiscal and policy oriented state office. The student may also propose another location for the internship if he or she has obtained one their own.

•Scholarship recipient shall be enrolled part or full-time in a Central Texas area college or university. “Central Texas” shall be inclusive of the Greater Austin area and includes higher educational entities within 75 miles of the State Capitol.

•Scholarship funds will be used for tuition, books, and related educational expenses. In all cases, funds will be paid directly to the college or university on the student’s behalf.

Applications should include:

•a resume reflecting academic (including GPA), professional, and personal achievement;
•two (2) written letters of recommendation from academic and/or professional sources; and
•a one-page cover letter with a brief description of the planned internship and a brief statement by the applicant about their public policy interests.

The scholarship selection committee will review applications and finalists will be invited to an interview. All decisions will be made by December 15, 2010. Please mail applications before the November 7, 2010, deadline to:

Senator Gregory Luna Legislative Scholars and Fellows Program.

The Senate Hispanic Research Council is currently accepting applications for the 2011 Senator Gregory Luna Legislative Scholars and Fellows Program.


With the 82nd Legislative Session on the horizon, it is once again time to prepare for the next class of future leaders to participate in our legislative process through the Senate Hispanic Research Council (SHRC). The SHRC is the body that operates the Senator Gregory Luna Legislative Scholars and Fellows Program for undergraduate and graduate students to participate as legislative aides in the Texas Legislature.

The 2011 Senator Gregory Luna Legislative Scholars and Fellows Program application is now available on our website. This is a wonderful opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to obtain high-level legislative experience in the Texas Legislature. The program provides invaluable experience for these budding leaders of tomorrow and can propel them on their professional career paths. In addition, Scholars and Fellows receive a $2,000 monthly stipend to assist with living expenses. Application deadline: October 29, 2010.

KTSW Jobs

KTSW-FM 89.9, the official radio station of Texas State University, is now accepting applications for a variety of positions for the Spring 2011 semester. Applicants must be enrolled at Texas State University to be eligible for hire. Departments include Programming (on-air announcer/DJ), Sports, News, Production, Promotions, Sales, Music and more. Applications and job descriptions are available at http://www.ktsw.net. Hiring for most positions will be completed by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, December 6th, 2010.

GRAPHIC DESIGNER
Application Deadline: October 15th, 2010 at 5:00 p.m.
This is a paid by stipend position.
The Graphic Designer is responsible for all KTSW graphics including, but not limited to, newspaper ads, posters, handbills, t-shirts, program guides and website graphics. Must have knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and In-Design. Prior design experience helpful. Must be able to meet deadlines and manage time appropriately. Applicants must submit a design portfolio with application, which will be returned upon request.

SALES MANAGER
This position is paid by commission.
The Sales Manager is responsible for managing the KTSW account executives. You will also be expected to generate underwriting sales and contributions from businesses for KTSW. Must develop relationships with potential clients while maintaining current business relationships. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, out-going personality a plus. Must be professional and friendly and knowledgeable about KTSW. Prior sales experience a plus. No previous KTSW experience required.

ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE
This position is paid by commission.
Account Executives are responsible for selling sponsorships to area businesses. AEs make contact and establish relationships with prospective clients. They also assist in fundraising for KTSW events. AEs are required to go through a 3-4 hour training & orientation. AEs receive a 5%-15% commission on all sales.

DISC JOCKEY
This is a volunteer position.
Disc Jockeys are responsible for a weekly, two-hour on-air radio shift. Disc Jockeys are responsible for following all KTSW and FCC on-air radio policies. Disc Jockeys do not schedule or program their own music but can expect to gain experience with on-air performance and the operation of professional radio studio equipment. No prior experience necessary. Must possess excellent verbal communication skills and multi-tasking skills.

PROGRAM PRODUCER
This is a volunteer position.
Program Producers are responsible for the development and implementation of a weekly, one or two-hour on-air specialty show. Specialty shows should be designed to add diversity to KTSW programming while remaining compatible with the KTSW format. To be eligible for a Program Producer position the applicant must have a minimum of one semester of on-air experience. Applicants must submit a Specialty Show Proposal with the KTSW Application. The Specialty Show Proposal must include a proposed title, a description of the proposed show, name(s) of on-air personalities involved, and a sample playlist. Must possess excellent verbal communication skills and multi-tasking skills. Applicants must have previous KTSW experience.

THE LOCAL SHOW - PROGRAM PRODUCER
This is a volunteer position.
The Local Show Program Producer is responsible for the development and implementation of a weekly, two-hour on-air specialty show featuring music by artists from San Marcos, Austin, San Antonio and the surrounding area. The Local Show is designed to add diversity to KTSW programming while remaining compatible with the KTSW format. To be eligible for The Local Show Program Producer position, the applicant must have a minimum of one semester of on-air experience. Applicants must submit a Specialty Show Proposal with the KTSW Application. The Specialty Show Proposal must include name(s) of on-air personalities involved, and a sample playlist, and a description of how you plan to continue and improve The Local Show. Must possess excellent verbal communication skills and multi-tasking skills. Applicants must have previous KTSW experience.

THE BOOM BOX - PROGRAM PRODUCER
This is a volunteer position.
The Boom Box Program Producer is responsible for the development and implementation of a weekly, two-hour on-air specialty show featuring music from the hip-hop genre. The Boom Box is designed to add diversity to KTSW programming while remaining compatible with the KTSW format. To be eligible for The Boom Box Program Producer position the applicant must have a minimum of one semester of on-air experience. Applicants must submit a Specialty Show Proposal with the KTSW Application. The Specialty Show Proposal must include name(s) of on-air personalities involved, and a sample playlist, and a description of how you plan to continue and improve The Boom Box. Must possess excellent verbal communication skills and multi-tasking skills. Applicants must have previous KTSW experience.

TEXAS STATE OF MIND - PROGRAM PRODUCER
This is a volunteer position.
The Texas State of Mind Program Producer is responsible for the development and implementation of a weekly, two-hour on-air specialty show featuring music from the Texas country genre. Texas State of Mind is designed to add diversity to KTSW programming while remaining compatible with the KTSW format. To be eligible for the Texas State of Mind Program Producer position the applicant must have a minimum of one semester of on-air experience. Applicants must submit a Specialty Show Proposal with the KTSW Application. The Specialty Show Proposal must include name(s) of on-air personalities involved, and a sample playlist, and a description of how you plan to continue and improve Texas State of Mind. Must possess excellent verbal communication skills and multi-tasking skills. Applicants must have previous KTSW experience.

THE SPANISH SHOW - PROGRAM PRODUCER
This is a volunteer position.
The Spanish Show Program Producer is responsible for the development and implementation of a weekly, two-hour on-air specialty show featuring music from the Latin genre and topics applicable to the Spanish-speaking community. The Spanish Show is designed to add diversity to KTSW programming while remaining compatible with the KTSW format. To be eligible for The Spanish Show Program Producer position the applicant must have a minimum of one semester of on-air experience. Applicants must submit a Specialty Show Proposal with the KTSW Application. The Specialty Show Proposal must include name(s) of on-air personalities involved, and a sample playlist, and a description of how you plan to continue and improve The Spanish Show. Must possess excellent verbal communication skills in English and Spanish and multi-tasking skills. Applicants must have previous KTSW experience.

DRIVE TIME SHOW - COORDINATOR/PROGRAM PRODUCER/TEAM MEMBER
This is a volunteer position.
A Drive Time Show Coordinator/Producer/Team Member will be responsible for the development and implementation of a one or more afternoon a week, two-hour on-air specialty show with a variety show style format featuring news, live musical performances, interviews, sports, requested music, pre-recorded production elements and whatever else fits! Team member positions needed are: Producer/Coordinator, Assistant Producer/Coordinator, Host/Co-Host, and Production Assistant. Minimum one semester of KTSW experience required for Host and Co-Host; all other team members do not need prior KTSW experience. Applicants must submit a Specialty Show Proposal to include name(s) of person(s) involved, a description of how you would like to contribute to the Drive Time Show Team, and an idea of an element or feature you’d like to see become a part of the Drive Time Show.

PRODUCTION ASSISTANT
This is a volunteer position.
A Production Assistant is responsible for producing promotional announcements, public service announcements, station imaging and other non-music elements broadcast on KTSW. Production Assistants work closely with the Production Director and the Assistant Production Director to develop scripts and ideas for prerecorded elements. Production Assistants are eligible for a Request Block Disc Jockey position and/or a Drive Time Show Coordinator/Program Producer Team Member position. Creativity is a big plus; being a team player is a must. No prior experience necessary. Must possess excellent verbal communication skills.

SPORTS STAFF
This is a volunteer position; compensation is offered for some duties.
A Sports Staff member assists in all things related to sports programming, reporting and information. Duties vary and include, but are not limited to, on-air play-by-play & color commentary, audio console operation, sideline reporting, writing sports news stories, producing/hosting a sports talk show and contributing to the KTSW blog. Knowledge of sports is a necessity; knowledge of Bobcat Athletics and Southland sports is a big plus. No prior KTSW experience necessary. Must possess excellent verbal communication skills.

MUSIC REVIEWER
This is a volunteer position.
Music Reviewers are responsible for screening music submissions and suggesting tracks for airing on KTSW. Responsible for writing reviews for online or on-air use. Punctuality is a must. Familiarity with KTSW format is a big plus. No prior KTSW experience necessary.

PROMOTIONS ASSISTANT
This is a volunteer position.
Assists the Promotions Director and the Assistant Promotions Director in the implementation of KTSW events and promoting KTSW on and off campus as needed. Outgoing personality a plus but not necessary. Punctuality is a must. No prior KTSW experience necessary.

NEWS - IPI PRODUCER
This is a volunteer position.
Responsibilities for the IPI Producer include, but are not limited to, writing and producing KTSW's weekly public service show, In the Public Interest (IPI), scheduling guest interviews, and choosing IPI show themes and story ideas. Applicant should have experience using digital audio production software and audio equipment. Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must have administrative skills and a flexible schedule. Punctuality and ability to meet deadlines a must. Applicants must have previous KTSW experience.

NEWS - IPI REPORTER
This is a volunteer position.
IPI Reporters are responsible for assisting in the development, writing and production of KTSW's weekly public service program, In the Public Interest (IPI). IPI reporters are responsible for writing, conducting interviews, and producing IPI stories. Creativity, punctuality and the ability to meet deadlines a must. No previous KTSW experience required.

NEWSCAST REPORTER/ANCHOR
This is an on-call volunteer position.
Reporters are responsible for researching and writing stories for on-air newscasts and/or special reports. Reporters must be on-call at certain times in order to report on the latest news on campus and in San Marcos. Reporters have the option to audition for News Anchor positions. News Anchors have all the responsibilities of News Reporters plus on-air newscast anchoring duties. Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills. Knowledge of Adobe Audition helpful, but not required. Must have a flexible schedule and a passion for news! Punctuality and ability to meet deadlines a must.
