University Star Positions

The University Star has just kicked off another year of covering the Texas State community — and we need your help.

The University Star is hiring students from all majors, experience levels, and backgrounds for the fall 2010 semester.

The Star is celebrating its 100th year anniversary, and there is no better time to become a part of our team. All positions are paid and real world experience is crucial for breaking into the media industry. Students interested in working for an award-winning paper and advancing their career opportunities are encouraged to apply for a position at The Star.

One of the oldest student-run publications in Texas, The Star uses its First Amendment rights to keep government and the university administration honest and transparent while informing, entertaining and engaging Texas State and the community as a whole. Job Descriptions:
(Remember: this is a learning lab. If you’re willing to learn, we’re willing to teach you)
•          News reporters:
Must be able to report on university and local news, gather information, conduct interviews and come into the newsroom to have stories edited.

•          Trends reporters/columnists:
Reporters must be able to report on university and local arts, entertainment, social and cultural events, gather information, conduct interviews and come into the newsroom to have stories edited. Columnists must write original columns on specific subjects for weekly publication and come into the newsroom for editing.

•          Sports reporters/columnists:
Reporters must be able to report on university and local sports, gather information, conduct interviews and come into the newsroom to have stories edited. Columnists must write original columns on specific subjects for weekly publication and come into the newsroom for editing.

•          Opinions columnists:
Must be able to write thought-provoking columns on university, local and state events and come into the newsroom for editing.

•          Copy editors:
Will assist in writing headlines and editing stories through fact checking, grammar, spelling and punctuation. Must have working knowledge of Associated Press style and available Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings/nights.

•          Photographers:
Must be able to capture visual human reaction to events, gather subject’s information, edit pictures and write cutlines. Having digital SLR equipment a plus.

•          Page Designers:
Must be able to layout pages using InDesign. Knowledge of other Adobe products is a plus. Must be available Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings/nights.

•          Videographers:
Some experience with either shooting or editing video necessary. Workers will be trained in Final Cut Pro and shooting techniques. Flexible schedule preferable.

•          Illustrators:
Must be able to work with the editorial staff to create editorial cartoons and story illustrations as well as bring original ideas to the table.

•          Comic artists:
Must be able to create an original and entertaining comic strip to be published three days a week.

How To Apply:
All applications can be picked up and dropped off at The Star's front office in the Trinity Building. Please attach copies of previous work if available. Applicants can, and are encouraged to, apply for multiple sections. The application process at The University Star is highly competitive and students who have already applied are encouraged to try again and it is often necessary to do so.
